The Angry Inch (of water)
Stormy weather hit Chicago hard the other night, and we don't have much of a break until tomorrow. In my area alone there was flooding, power outtages, and downed trees. For those fortunate enough to live on higher plains yesterday was just another storm. However for those living in sub-levels, like me, the rain changed lives.I'm grateful that I wasn't home when the water started pouring through the door and parts of the walls. I realize it could have been a lot worse, but the difficult part came today when I had to throw away pictures, books, furniture, sentimental items, and other things destroyed by the 1" of rain water and debris that covered most of my apartment. The stench of sewage, the infestation of bugs, and having to leave home really felt surreal.
Last night gave me a glimpse of what Katrina did to people. I know that my loss isn't even close to theirs, but when something like this happens it gives you greater perspective on life and highlights the importance of friends & family. My hero last night was my friend Jeremy V for taking me in and consoling a bruised and whirry heart.
