An Ear Full

I’ve been dealing with sinuses and a cold for the past week. The fluctuation of the weather certainly hasn’t been a helping factor in getting better, but slowly but surely I was recovering. That was until last night when it hit me hard!

My head was so congested that I tried to relieve the pressure by pinching my nostrils, closing my mouth, and blowing. It’s a trick I know MANY do, and something even my doctor showed me a long time ago. Typically it works fine and does the trick, but last night may have been a painful exception.

I did the trick after work yesterday and by that night I had acute pains shoting through my ear and the rest of my body. Every time I swallowed, hiccupped, coughed, or even took a deep breath I could feel a surge of pain racing throughout my body. Needless to say it was a long night and I didn't get much rest.

This morning I went to my doctor and discovered I have an ear infection, but my doctor made no mention of a damaged eardrum. After getting my medicine and going back to work my ear started to feel like it was draining, so I put a tissue near my ear and when I pulled it back the tissue had spots of bloody. My hearing has been muffled ever since, and that’s when I decided to take this picture…

WTF! That ain’t normal! Now I'm really wondering how much damage was done and if my doctor evaluated me correctly.

Pinching your nose, closing your mouth and blowin has a medical term and it's called a ValSalva maneuver. Key to this is to not blow as hard as you did. What you have now Troy is blown blood vessels in your inner ear which is now infected. Good going Troy!! Hopefully the doctor gave you the right medicine in order to heal effectively, but don't expect immediate results. I would suggest you get a referral to see an ear specialist. This is nothing to take lightly.

You poor thing. I'm not a doctor, but I would recommend watching the ear closely and noting any changes. Report them to your doctor and see if he can give a referal to a specialist if need be. Take care of yourself TroyBoy
